In 1970, Harvey Plotnick was president of the Henry Regnery Company, the parent company of Oz book publishers Reilly and Lee. He wrote a letter to Fred M. Meyer authorizing the use of characters and locations from the Oz books still controlled by the publishers in the Club's new magazine of Oz stories. The letter was published as the first item in the 1971 issue, the first issue of Oziana.
